How to apply for a hairdresser or barber's registration
A guide to registration
It is a legal requirement to register with Environmental Health so that you can operate as a hairdresser or barber in our area.
There are two types of registration:
If you work at your own premises, then you must apply for both types of registration.
What happens next?
When we receive your application for a premises, an officer from our Environmental Health (Commercial) Team will arrange to visit your premises. We will provide guidance and ensure adequate standards of hygiene and safety are maintained. Hairdressing can create a risk of bacterial, viral and fungal infections and the transmission of blood-borne diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B.
What must I do?
You must meet the following legal requirements and safe practice guidelines to become registered:
- Cleanliness of premises
- Cleanliness of instruments, towels, materials and equipment requirements
- Operator requirements (cleanliness of person and uniform)
- The treatment of wounds
- The use of hairdressing products and chemicals
- General health and safety requirements
What else do I need to do?
When you receive your registration certificate it must be displayed in a position where it can be seen at all times.
You must have employers liability insurance (if you employ staff) and we recommend you also have public liability insurance.
