Asbestos collections - domestic properties
How to arrange a collection
Street Scene Services offers a collection service for asbestos for domestic properties only and operates in conjunction with The Environment Agency.
Asbestos is classed as a hazardous material and has to be handled by trained staff. Also, the disposal cost at the designated waste sites can be significant. Therefore, the council has to pass on these costs.
You have two options:
Arrange a collection via the council
Please contact the administration team on 01455 238141. Alternatively, visit other items we collect - get a quote. The service is chargeable and has to be arranged in advance. The cost of this service will be provided following a pre-arranged visit as well as photographs and maybe an asbestos report to assess the work. The officer will explain how to make the payment and make arrangements for a collection date.
The council have to obtain a consignment note from the Environment Agency, as asbestos is controlled waste. The Leicestershire County Council informs the council as to when and where the asbestos may be taken. This service is for domestic properties only.
As the charge made to the council to perform this service is quite high, the service operates a bookable service. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss the available dates. This is not ideal, we know, but it does mean that we are still able to offer the service to residents at a much reduced fee compared to that of private companies.
Transport the waste yourself
Residents removing asbestos from their own property also have the facility of using Leicestershire County Council Recycling & Household Waste Sites (leicestershire.gov.uk). Some of the sites are allowed to accept asbestos and you are advised to contact them directly on 0116 305 0001 to discuss this further - please note that the Stapleton Lane site in Barwell cannot accept asbestos.
Cement bonded asbestos from householders is only accepted at five sites. To request a free short term permit, please call Leicestershire County Council on 0116 305 0001.
