How to rent
Renting information
The government have produced a guide for tenants and landlords in the private rented sector called how to rent (GOV.UK). If you are a tenant or a landlord, this guide will help you understand your rights and responsibilities. It provides a checklist and more detailed information on each stage of the process, including:
- What to look out for before renting
- Living in a rented home
- What happens at the end of a tenancy
- What to do if things go wrong
It’s now a legal requirement for landlords to give their tenants the latest version of the 'how to rent' guide at the start of their tenancy.
Further information:
- The Tenant Fees Act 2019 (GOV.UK) which applies to all tenancies from 1 June 2020
- Electrical safety regulations (GOV.UK) which came into force on 1 June 2020
- Minimum energy efficiency standards guidance for domestic landlords (GOV.UK) which came into force on 1 April 2020
