Further equality information

The council has general and specific equality duties under the act. The general duties require us to have due regard in all we do for the need to eliminate discrimination and other forms of 'prohibited conduct'.

The council has a duty to advance equality, and promote good relations between groups who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

This will involve:

• Removing or minimising disadvantages and taking steps to meet the needs of those whose needs are different from others due to protected groups and characteristics
• Encouraging people from protected groups to participate in public life or in other activities where their participation is quite low
