Making a healthy start
Help is available for parents to ensure they get their children off to a healthy start in life.
For information on breastfeeding and being a new mother, please visit better health - breastfeeding (nhs.uk)
By giving children varied foods that are low in sugar and salt, as well as plenty of fruit and vegetables, and encouraging active play, you can make sure they grow up with strong bones, healthy teeth and do not struggle with obesity.
The Leicestershire Healthy Tots Programme (LHTP)
If you have a child under the age of four or you are more than 10 weeks pregnant, you may be entitled to money towards buying healthy food and milk.
If you're eligible, you will receive a Healthy Start card with money on it that you can use in UK shops, money will be added onto this card every four weeks. You can also use the Healthy Start card to collect:
- Healthy start vitamins – during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Vitamin drops for babies and young children – these are suitable from birth to four years old
To see if you are eligible please visit healthy start (healthystart.nhs.uk)
LHTP is funded by Public Health and supports and recognises achievements in child health, wellbeing and development in early years.
