More about housing associations

Obtaining a housing association tenancy

We advertise some housing association properties through the Choice Based Lettings (CBL) scheme. We nominate applicants to the housing association for their vacancies who will then consider your application and decide if they will offer you the property and a tenancy.

You must be registered on the CBL scheme to be able to bid (register interest) for these properties. Please visit our finding a home page for more information on how you can apply online.

Not all housing association properties are advertised through the CBL scheme and some will operate their own waiting lists. You may wish to contact them to see if you can apply directly to them. Most housing associations will operate a policy of offering accommodation to those in the greatest housing need. This is usually decided by awarding points or priority depending on your housing circumstances.

The rents for housing association properties are calculated in accordance with government guidance and tenants have to be given clear information about how their rent and service charges are set and how they can be changed. They often charge an affordable rent. This means that the rent is up 80% of what it would cost if you were renting the property privately. The amount of rent that you will have to pay will be stated in your tenancy agreement. Financial assistance could be available to those on a low income, or those without a working income to help with paying the rent. You may obtain further information of your eligibility to claim from the housing benefits team, welfare rights and Citizens Advice Bureau.
