What happens if you have a spare bedroom?
If you have one 'spare' bedroom, the amount of rent and any service charges will be reduced by 14%, therefore your housing benefit will be reduced. If you have two or more spare bedrooms the amount of rent and any service charges will be reduced by 25% and your housing benefit will be reduced.
For example, if your rent is £100 per week, you'll lose £14 if you have one spare bedroom and £25 if you have two or more spare bedrooms.
If your benefit is reduced, you will have to pay the difference between your housing benefit and your rent.
