Letter to vendors - climate change considerations
The considerations
You may be aware of the recent government announcement, which confirmed that there will be a ban on single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks, and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers from October 2023. This affects retailers, takeaways, food vendors and the hospitality industry. Find out more about the ban on single use plastics in England (gov.uk)
Since the government's ban on supplying plastic straws and stirrers came into force in England on 1 October 2020, we have been asking all vendors at our events to abide by the following green credentials as a form of best practice:
- No single use packaging
- No plastic straws/stirrers
- No non-recyclable cutlery or trays
- Recyclable coffee cups/plastic cups and plastic glasses
- Vendors to offer discounts for visitors who bring their own plates and drinking vessels to the event
We encourage you to adhere to this advice for any events that you are due to attend with us before the ban on single use plastic comes into effect on 24 October 2023. Please phase out any items that are listed in the government ban announcement.
For attendance at any of our events from 24 October 2023, you will not be permitted to attend if you do not adhere to the government’s ban on single use plastic. Spot checks may be made on event days and, if a discrepancy is found, you may be asked to leave our event. You will be asked upon application for a stall that you have read the above letter to vendors and agree to follow Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council's green credentials as a form of best practice and will abide by the latest government legislation with regards to single use plastic.
We hope you will be able to continue to support the efforts of our climate change vision to work towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030 (direct council emissions) and to ensure that the borough is net zero by 2050. View the council's climate change strategy 2022 - 2024
