The purpose of the strategy

Purpose

The purpose of the Young People's Strategy 2023 to 2026 (PDF) is to set out the work the council will do to support young people in the borough to meet their full potential. This strategy is aimed at young people aged 11 to 19 years old and up to 25 years old for those with special educational needs or disabilites.The strategy has been developed via consultation with young people through the Hinckley and Bosworth Voice Forum.

Strategic aims

The overall aim of the strategy is to ensure that, together with our key partners, we enable young people to:

  • Gain employment and be work ready
  • Make positive choices and shape their future
  • Enjoy access to activities
  • Be healthy, both physically and emotionally
  • Be safe and feel safe

Employment

In order to enable young people to gain employment and be work ready:

  • We will increase the opportunities for young people to volunteer in their communities
  • We will provide employment opportunities for young people, including apprenticeships and work experience
  • We will work with others to help ensure that young people understand what career choices and opportunities they have
  • We will work with others to encourage local businesses to provide opportunities of employment for young people
  • We will work with others to enable young people to have confidence in their future and raise aspirations

Empowerment

In order to enable young people to be empowered to make informed choices and shape their future:

  • We will work with young people in schools to deliver key messages on a range of topics such as healthy relationships, exploitation, anti-social behaviour, drugs and alcohol, diversity and health and wellbeing
  • We will work with young people to ensure their voices are heard and their views are involved in the decision making process
  • We will work with young people to encourage positive behaviours and celebrate the positive contributions they make to their community
  • We will work with others to give young people the skills to empower them to shape their future, such as with money management or with housing options
  • We will work with young people to embrace and enjoy differences
  • We will reward and recognise achievements of young people 

Enjoy access to activities

In order to enable young people to enjoy access to activities:

  • We will provide young people with information on activities and opportunities that they can access in their local area
  • We will work with others to improve facilities and recreational activities
  • We will support activities and opportunities to enable young people to gain life skills 

Health and wellbeing

In order to enable young people to be healthy, both physically and emotionally:

  • We will provide information and guidance to young people on how to stay healthy
  • We will support young people to access appropriate sexual health and relationship information 
  • We will work with partners to provide relevant support and intervention, ensuring young people know where they can go to get help for both their mental and physical needs

Safety

In order to enable young people to be safe and to feel safe:

  • We will work in partnership to keep young people safe and protected from harm
  • We will encourage young people to feel confident to report concerns they have about their own or others' safety
  • We will work in partnership to deliver prevention and awareness work to provide young people with the knowledge to help keep themselves safe and to feel safe within their local community
  • We will engage and collaborate with young people to prevent and tackle serious violence

Our delivery model

The overall aims and outcomes of this strategy will be achieved through joint working with all of our key partners from the statutory, business and voluntary and community sectors. We work together with delivery plans aligning to relevant national, countywide and local plans.

Successful delivery is based on available resources remaining in place and the ongoing commitment and support of partners.
