What is neighbourhood planning?
Neighbourhood planning gives communities direct power to develop a shared vision for their neighbourhood and shape the development and growth of their local area. Communities are able to choose where they want growth, have their say on design, and what infrastructure should be provided. They can also strive to deliver ambitious projects, including tackling climate change and helping the environment. Neighbourhood planning provides a powerful set of tools for local people to plan for the types of development to meet their community’s needs. A neighbourhood plan should support the delivery of strategic policies set out in the Local Plan and should shape and direct development that is outside those strategic policies. However, it is absolutely critical that neighbourhood plans are not a tool to prevent development.
