Beginner's guide to running
Whether you are completely new to running, would like to get back into it or are returning from injury, this information will hopefully provide you with the advice and motivation you need to get your trainers out, helping you to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.
How do I get started?
Don’t be afraid to start your programme by walking for an amount that feels comfortable for you, anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. You don’t want to overdo it and put yourself off before you have even started. Once you can easily walk for 30 minutes, start to add running intervals into your walking. Again, do this in a way that is most comfortable for you. For example, you could start by running for two minutes and then walking for five, or you may like to try alternating running and walking between lampposts, gradually increasing the amount of running time.

Where should I run?
You can run anywhere that’s safe and enjoyable. The best routes tend to be those that are scenic, well-lit and traffic-free, such as local parks. Try to vary your routes to make running feel easier and more interesting. You could also talk to other runners to find out about the route they run.
How to maintain motivation:
- Don’t push yourself too hard too soon: progression must be gradual and done at a pace that suits you. You don’t want to overdo it in your first week and end up giving up. Why not set yourself an aim, such as running a 5K event for charity? This way you can set yourself smaller, more regular goals to keep you going each week
- Find a running buddy: running is much easier and more enjoyable when done with someone else who can help to keep you motivated. Instead of arranging to meet a friend for a coffee, why not suggest a run instead? This way you can catch up and get fit at the same time. If not, why not join one of our local running groups with friendly, like-minded runners? These suggestions are a great way to maintain motivation and ensure you keep running on a regular basis
- Treat yourself: make sure you reward yourself when you reach your running goals. For example, once you have achieved your goal to run a 5K event, why not buy yourself some new running gear?
