Lead, radiation and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Ingestion of lead via old deteriorating paintwork and lead pipework can cause poisoning particularly in young children and the elderly. If paintwork is sound, then painting over it is often the safer option. Proper precautions should be taken to limit the ingestion of lead paint dust particles if removal is necessary.

Lead poisoning can be prevented by replacing lead pipework to domestic water systems, sampling and analysis may be necessary to determine the level of lead contamination in the water.

Exposure to radon gas increases the risk of lung cancer and exposure to non-ionising radiation like microwaves, ultraviolet and radio-frequency radiation can cause skin tissue damage and/or eye damage.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a diverse group of organic chemicals which include formaldehyde. They are gaseous at room temperature and found in a variety of materials within the home. Some may cause irritation or allergic reactions if they come in contact with skin, eyes or the respiratory tract. High concentrations can lead to headaches, dizziness and drowsiness.
