Preventing falls
Falling between levels
Window restrictors or safety catches should be fitted to windows above ground floor level, but should be easy to override by an adult in the event of a fire, to allow a secondary means of escape.
Window sills should be at least 800mm from the floor. If the window is below 800mm then it must be made of toughened glazing.
Guarding (balustrade) should be provided on balconies and landings and should be designed to discourage climbing. It should be strong enough to withstand weight if lent against it and must be at least 1,100mm high. There should be no gaps in the guarding wider than 100mm.
