Preventing fires

Reduce your risk of having a fire at home, which is particularly important where children or elderly people are in the household.

Here are a few things that you should check regularly:

  • Ensure that electrical sockets are not overloaded, there are no exposed wires
  • Unplug appliances at night, where possible
  • Check that cigarettes and other heat sources are fully extinguished or turned off. For example, hair straighteners
  • Do not store materials that are able to catch fire easily in the property or in communal areas (cardboard and soft furnishings)
  • Shut internal doors at night to prevent fires from spreading
