About street naming and numbering

Overview

Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council is responsible for the naming and numbering of streets and buildings within Hinckley and Bosworth Borough. This is a statutory function of the council (Section 18 of the Public Health Act 1925).

In addition, the owner or occupier of a building must maintain the mark of the building (its number if allocated) so that it is legible from the street and not obstructed wherever possible. (The 1985 Leicestershire Act: Part 3 section 19)

The National Address Gazetteer (NAG) requires all interested parties to have a single, efficient and standardised means of locating and referencing properties.

Street naming and numbering's role is to make sure that any new streets and/or buildings are named and numbered in a logical and standardised way.

The council's Land and Property Data Manager is responsible for street naming and numbering. The Land and Property Data Manager shall ensure that all new streets and properties are named/numbered as appropriate in accordance with BS7666:2006 and uploaded to the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) in order for it to be included in the NAG.

BS766:2006 and the conventions published with it give guidance on what roads can or should be called as well as suggesting numbering conventions. It is Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council's policy to adhere to these conventions in all but the most exceptional of circumstances.

The processes associated with street naming and numbering are currently being reviewed, once finalised details will be published on this web page.
Please note that whilst every effort will be made, it is not always possible to deal with visitors in person at the council offices without an appointment.
