Burbage Common open day event cancelled to ground and weather conditions
Due to adverse weather conditions, the Borough Council have reluctantly had to make the decision to cancel this Sunday’s Burbage Common Open Day (14 May).
After heavy rainfall throughout recent weeks the ground is too waterlogged for the event to take place. The parking field is particularly wet and will not be dry enough to take some 1,000 plus cars on Sunday. Holding the event will likely lead to significant grounds damage, particularly to the meadow areas.
There is also more rain and further thunderstorms forecast over the next few days, so it is highly unlikely that the site will get any drier. As it stands, the wet weather would mean the event could lead to further grounds damage, as well as traffic disruption on Leicester Road due to restricted traffic flow. The common is a haven for wildlife and we don’t want to risk damaging this important habitat.
Paul Scragg, Senior Green Spaces Officer at the Borough Council said:
We apologise for the late cancellation, particularly to stall holders and everyone who was looking forward to attending the event. We still hope to be able to rearrange it for later in the year, so please look out for any further updates.
