Children and their families flocked to Hinckley for the return of the Snap Dragon Festival, with three fun-filled days of free activities last week (Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 August).

There was plenty of excitement for the whole family, with different themes on each day. TV characters Pip and Posy, of Milkshake! Sky Kids, also appeared on Wednesday to celebrate National Playday. The duo had their photos taken with hundreds of young fans, even meeting Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Cllr Scott Gibbens.

Throughout the festival, children and their families were able to enjoy a host of activities, including a traditional day at the seaside in the giant sand pit part sponsored by Hinckley BID. They could also meet Snappy, the Festival’s dragon mascot, groove in the Snappy disco provided by Fosse 107, join in a music and movement session with Jo Jingles, play in the games garden and enjoy a teddy bear’s picnic.

Youngsters also got creative in a dedicated craft station, aided by the United Reform Church, visited the ‘well-being woods’ to learn about the ‘five ways to well-being’ with council health ambassadors, and had a go at a new sport in the sports zone run by Hinckley & Bosworth Sport and Health Alliance.

Meanwhile, children could listen to stories from Tom the Tale Teller, read books from Hinckley library, get toys and games repaired by Hinckley Fixers, climb the scouts climbing wall, take part in a dhol percussion and bhangra dance workshop with Jodi dancers, meet with Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and lots more.

Executive Member for Culture, Deputy Leader Councillor Mark Bools said:

“What a wonderful three days. The team have welcomed thousands of children and their families, and it has been a pleasure to see so many smiling faces. The festival is now in its 10th year and has offered so many fun play opportunities, at no or minimal cost. The arrival of Pip and Posy for our youngest residents was a huge hit. This breadth of games and toys offered took a lot of organisation and my thanks go to everyone involved, including our events and green spaces teams, plus Fosse 107, Hinckley BID, the individual charities, and organisations – we couldn’t hold this type of event without you.”

Marc Ollington, Marketing Director, Magic Light Pictures said:

“Magic Light Pictures were delighted to bring Pip and Posy to the Snap Dragon Festival to help celebrate this year’s Playday.  Play is central to Pip and Posy, so it was wonderful to take part in this joyous event.”
