Borough’s Ukrainian Community Celebrate Independence

The event, held at the Meeting Centre in Hinckley’s Marchant Road on Saturday (2 September), was supported by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council as an opportunity to celebrate our Ukrainian community.
 
Around 170 people attended the celebrations which began with a welcome from the Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Councillor Scott Gibbens and included local community leaders, Ukrainian refugees, hosts and their families. Guests enjoyed a live Ukrainian singer, as well as traditional Ukrainian songs sung by some Ukrainian children. Meanwhile, Art to Heart provided art therapy tasters sessions and guests were able to sample some traditional Ukrainian food. 
 
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, more than 100 generous host families in Hinckley and Bosworth have opened their homes and lives to Ukrainians. Hinckley and Bosworth has also welcomed more than 200 Ukrainians into the borough, with the support of many local community leaders.
 
Some highlights over the last 12 months have included:

• Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has provided more than 35 Ukrainian households with secure accommodation, both in the private rented sector and in social housing
• Tennis sessions from Neil Roberts at Hinckley tennis club have been attended by more than 35 Ukrainian adults and children. The sessions have also attracted the attention of others nationally, such as Sports England
• A YouTube video has been created by Eugene Moroi, the borough council’s Ukraine support officer, with advice and guidance on navigating housing pathways
• The Hinckley Ukrainian Group Support (HUGS) Christmas party, which was organised by Malcolm and Jane Clarke, was well attended and enjoyed by hosts and their guests. This gave everyone a chance to sample and enjoy some traditional Ukrainian foods
