Long-standing councillor receives honorary title
The borough’s longest-serving councillor and former Mayor David Bill has received the title of Honorary Alderman at an event this week.
The Borough Council has the power to give the title to those who they believe to have offered important services to the council, but who are no longer members. David Bill is the first Honorary Alderman since Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council was formed under local government re-organisation in 1974.
Being an Honorary Alderman gives the individual the opportunity to attend and take part in the council’s civic ceremonies.
David Bill was officially presented the title at a special meeting of the council at the council offices on 12 September 2023. The presentation was attended by current and former councillors, family and friends.
He served the community as a district councillor for fifty years, firstly working alongside the former Hinckley Urban District Council and then as a founder member of the new Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council in 1974. One of the first decisions taken at the time was the inclusion of the name Hinckley into the new title.
He was Leader of the Council for several spells over about 20 years before handing over to the current Leader, Councillor Stuart Bray. During his time as councillor, he campaigned tirelessly for residents and also served as Mayor in 1991-1992. He formally retired as borough councillor in 2023.
At the event David said:
I am exceptionally touched to be given this honour by my fellow councillors. I wish to thank everyone has been with me on this journey and in particular my wife Valerie who has put up with me all these years. I especially want to thank the people who gave me the opportunity to serve them. I will still be here to help wherever I can.
Council Leader, Councillor Stuart Bray added:
It was an easy decision to give the title of Honorary Alderman to David Bill. Very few councillors serve their community for fifty years, and David helped and supported countless residents during his time in council. We look forward to welcoming him back for civic ceremonies for many years to come.
