Burbage Common open day event cancelled to ground conditions
Due to recent weather conditions, the Borough Council have reluctantly had to make the decision to cancel this Sunday’s Burbage Common Open Day (19 May).
After heavy rainfall throughout recent weeks the ground is too waterlogged for the event to take place. The parking field is particularly wet and will not be dry enough to take some 1,000+ cars on Sunday. Holding the event will likely lead to significant grounds damage, particularly to the meadow areas.
Whilst the weather forecast itself for the weekend is fair it is highly unlikely that the site will dry sufficiently causing significant grounds damage, as well as traffic disruption on Leicester Road due to restricted traffic flow. The common is a haven for wildlife and we don’t want to risk damaging this important habitat.
Paul Scragg, Senior Green Spaces Officer at the Borough Council said:
The Green Spaces team apologise for the late cancellation, it is a difficult decision to take, particularly to stall holders and everyone who was looking forward to attending the event. We still hope to be able to rearrange it for later in the year, so please look out for any further updates.
The Common does remain open for visitors for a visit and walk this weekend and the café will be open serving a wide range of refreshments.
