Councils work together on A5 anti-littering campaign
Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council are working with various councils including Blaby and Harborough District Councils, supported by National Highways on a campaign to reduce littering on the A5.
The campaign will run for four weeks from 9 September to 6 October 2024.
Each of the individual councils face many challenges cleansing this high-speed, busy road. To cleanse most of this road safely, traffic management must be installed which is costly and dangerous and impacts traffic flow for businesses along this road.
A key aim of the campaign is to educate road users on how they can report litter dropped from a vehicle, whilst another is to inform drivers that littering from your vehicle can incur a £400 fine.
Dropping litter from any vehicle, such as a car, van, lorry or scooter, is an offence. A fine (fixed penalty notice or FPN) can be issued to the person dropping the litter. The fine will be issued by the individual council's Clean Neighbourhoods Team.

During the campaign, officers will be holding multiple enforcement action days. Anyone caught littering will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.
Cllr Lynda Hodgkins, Executive Member for Parks, Open Spaces & Neighbourhood Services at Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, said: "This is an important campaign that aims to teach road users about the consequences of littering from their vehicles, and how they can report such incidents.
“Everybody knows they shouldn’t be littering. We hope that highlighting how easy it is to report littering and the hefty fine that can be issued will help drivers and passengers change their behaviour and take their litter home with them.
“It’s great to see other councils coming together to work on this campaign, and hopefully our collaborative efforts can have a lasting knock-on effect along the 243 miles of A5 that runs across the country.”
