Over 25 bags of litter were collected during a one-hour clean-up held at Hinckley Retail Park as part of Recycle Week organised by the Borough Council’s Business Climate Change Forum.

The theme of Recycle Week this year is ‘Rescue Me’ which aims to highlight the list of items which can be recycled is increasing.  The litter pick highlighted to everyone involved just how many items had just been thrown away with no thought to the environment or the fact that any of the items picked up could be recycled.

Staff from local businesses including DPD, Mira Technology Park and Holovis joined pupils from Sketchley School (Years 6 and 13) and St Martin’s Catholic Academy (Eco Club) and representatives from the Borough Council to take part in the litter pick.

Executive Member for Clean Neighbourhood’s at the Borough Council Cllr Lynda Hodgkins said: “Littering is a real blight on the environment for everyone.  I would urge everyone to take their litter home with them and recycle it or use a bin rather than simply throwing it out of a car window or just leaving it and expecting someone else to pick it up.

“Plastic bottles, coffee cups, sweet wrappers, cigarettes and cigarette butts and discarded chewing gum are often the worst offenders.  I would like to thank everyone who took part in this litter pick, let’s hope the message starts to get through and everyone can enjoy a less littered environment.”
